Student have 1000 total clinical practicum and internship hours upon graduating.

The program meets the requires for Florida Mental Health Counselor licensure. The program will also help prepare you for licensure exams. After graduating, you will have to work under supervision for around one year as a LMC associate before you can get officially licensed to practice independently.

We do have students who complete our program and get licensed in other states. Mental health counseling is a profession that is regulated at the state level. While there is some commonality in licensure requirements across states, specific requirements vary from state to state. If you are considering seeking licensure in a state other than Florida, you are strongly encouraged to review state specific requirements. The state regulatory board that oversees mental health counseling determines these requirements and typically posts them online.

As many of our master’s degree graduates have successfully pursued their Counseling Psychology Ph.D., the likelihood of being accepted to the UM Counseling Psychology Ph.D. is more than a random chance, although it varies by individuals in their preparation and readiness such as GRE score, publication, interviews, etc.

Classes are Monday- Thursday. During the fall and spring terms, class is from 5pm-7:40pm. During the summer term, class is from 5pm-8:55pm. The first year will be focused on coursework, while the second year will be focused on practicum. The hours that you will need to be at your outplacement site for practicum will vary.

Our program is not a school program but as a mental health counselor, one can use that to work in the schools. We could prepare the student to be a mental health counselor, and be licensed as a mental health counselor.  Some of our students then go on to be hired on as school counseling interns and become school counselors, working in the school system. 

Typically, 20-30 percent of our students go on to doctoral programs, and the rest go on to work in private practice, community mental health clinics, hospitals, schools, non-profits, universities, and government agencies.

Yes, there are opportunities to work with our faculty on research. Whether or not you will be paid varies on the opportunity.

This is not a social work program; it only focuses on mental health counseling.

Students can finish the program in as little as 2 years, or as long as 4 years.

OPT for international students is not offered while you are in the program. However, it may be possible post-graduation.
